In Mario Galaxy for Wii, how does the surfing penguins?

I'm stuck on the part of the galaxy dee handle on that first learn how. The Penguins coach sais, point your Wii Remote at the screen, and then I did but I did not do anyhitng. ive lef and returned a bunch of times, and everything else works with distance, so do not have to be thin to resynchronize, but doesn anyne know what is happening?
